28 November 2016

Folks,

Winter seemed to kick in full gear this weekend. It is snowing lightly, very gusty, and apparently cold. I went out to the lakes today and both are still open but some shelf ice was present this morning. If you have an open water itch to scratch I would suggest you do it very soon…

I have received no reports from anglers. It appears there has been very light traffic at both lakes recently.

The 11TH Annual Ice Derby will be held January 7th and I will be posting more updates as they become available, but so far we have an awesome t-shirt logo and sponsors for this year’s event. The prize ceremony will be held at the Wild Horse Casino & Hotel as usual and the times for the event have not changed. I will post a full flier on the website as soon as it is completed.

Hope all is well,

Jacob

03 November 2016

Another week closer to winter, and the weather has been unseasonably warm and sunny, with strong dry breezes in the afternoons.  Fishing reports have been mixed with some anglers doing amazingly well at Mundo and Embom with others struggling to get a bite.  Water temperature as of yesterday was about 53 degrees and the water was slightly off color, making perfect conditions for slow rolled spinners or streamer fishing.

I’m unsure what accounts for this large discrepancy in fishing action between reporters, but a few thoughts include willingness to change techniques when things are slow, and weather conditions at the time of fishing.

Now I am as stubborn as any respectable angler can be, but at some point you have to make a conscious choice to 1) not catch fish but fish with a technique you enjoy or 2) change your technique or location until you find the magic combination or the sun goes down.  On any given day with any given angler you cannot make a fish eat, but you can increase the odds of an eat occurring by mastering and employing multiple techniques throughout a slow bite day. Sitting in one location using only one technique without success for prolonged period of time is a recipe for a fishless day. Trolling the same lure all day without success for prolonged period of time is a recipe for a fishless day…

This week the Mundo docks were removed for the season. The Fish Crew also continued its work on the Mundo boat ramp. Gravel was added to the entry, sides and in water portion of the ramp yesterday. I have had no problems launching the Departments 18’ 25hp john boat. Do not back your truck tires past the concrete portion of the ramp! The final piece of work to be done will be completed in 2017. The ramp is useable and open for the remainder of the open water season. As per usual the Nation nor its agents are responsible for damages or injury that may occur while visiting the Jicarilla Apache Nation. Use at your own risk.

One note for the hard water fishermen the 11th Annual Ice Derby is currently being planned and has tentatively been scheduled for January 7th 2017. I’ll be posting more information as it becomes available.

Good luck fishing,

Jacob
