Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, December 27, 2018

Folks,

No real change in ice conditions but the weatherman is finally projecting some colder temperatures. Today the ice at Mundo measured 3-4" off the boat ramp, with more fluctuation in thickness the farther onto the sheet. Obviously folks have been fishing within 10 yards of the boat ramp.

Use your best judgement when traveling on ice.

Jicarilla Hunt - Saturday, December 22, 2018

Folks,

As I posted earlier this week the Office is are closed*(refer to 18 December post for dates), and I normally do not make a habit of checking e-mails on weekends, or holidays.

The last ice report received indicated unsafe conditions and lots of slush with extremely warm day time temps( as of today).

It looks like high temps will be in the mid forties over the weekend with the forecast indicating warm temps into Thursday next week.

If I get another update I will share it.

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, December 18, 2018

Folks,

Despite all of the good fishing reports I have been receiving the weatherman has decided to "rain" on the ice fishing parade. Over the weekend reports of 5" of ice in most locations on Mundo "Lots" of 15-18" trout and multiple 2 to 4 pound catfish.

Sadly its was not below freezing most of the weekend and Sundays high temp was in the mid-fifties. The ice sheet  lost consistency and thickness (back to 2-4"). The weatherman is predicting day time highs the next ten days in the mid to upper forties and nightly lows in the upper twenties. This is not a good short term forecast for folks thinking about ice fishing, and if correct will not allow safe access to the lakes before Christmas. The weatherman has been wrong in the past, and if I were a betting man he is going to be wrong again once or twice in the future.

Holiday Schedule Update:The Department will be closed for the Christmas Holiday Monday the 24th of December through the 26th and will be back on Thursday the 27th. The Department will also be closed the 31st of December through the 1st of January for the New Year Holiday and return Wednesday the 2nd.

Questions have been coming in regarding fishing derbies. The Department will not be holding an Ice Derby this year but will again be holding a spring open water derby. Participation and interest in the ice derby has been waning and the ice sheet itself has been less than dependable the last few years causing the Fish Crew a lot of stress due to safety concerns. We are hoping a new derby format and season will reinvigorate our loyal anglers and attendance will increase.

I will update the ice conditions before leaving for the holiday so keep and eye out. As many may be aware I try to update ice conditions as new information or reports become available.

Jicarilla Hunt - Friday, December 14, 2018

Folks,

I know all of you are getting excited about ice season. Reports from this week indicated 5" of ice on the south side of Mundo with the rest of the lake with less unstable ice (the angler wisely did not venture far). Embom looked to soft with water on top to fish one angler reported. I have no reports from Stone.

Usually we do not have safe ice until Christmas time so if we can start getting lower day time temps I think we should be on track for good even ice by next week. These day time temps have been killing the ice development.

Be safe and make sure you are comfortable with the decisions you make. No ice is safe ice, there are just some ice sheets that are less dangerous than others.

Angler reported excellent fishing multiple 20" fish, and consistent 12-17" fishing at Mundo. White, pink and chartreuse jigs all fishing well.

Be Safe,

J.

Jicarilla Hunt - Monday, December 10, 2018

Folks,

I have been traveling for business and some R&R. Just a few updates:

The ice is reported at 3-4" on the south side of Mundo. Roads are snow packed.

The Fish Crew will be returning to the office on Thursday this week and will get a more detailed report posted then.

Hope all is well, and lets keep the positive thoughts going for more snow!
