Folks,

It is HOT. Trout fishing is slowing down in the afternoons. Anglers are still reporting catches of trout in the evening and early morning. Many anglers are still catching but the fish are deeper and moving quite a bit slower during the day. These 90 degree days are tough on trout. Catfishing should be warming up and I have seen some excellent 9" to 10" bluegill swarming for the spawn.Just a heads up there will be 178 kids at Mundo Lake for our youth outdoor education program. If you're not into kids having a good time and learning about natural resources please stay away.

Good Luck,

j.

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, June 07, 2018

Folks,

This time of year it is a time to start thinking about warm water fishing. Catfish and bluegill fishing are great ways to keep fishing during the heat of summer and make fish tacos. Average Bluegill size this year was almost 10 inches in one small visual survey conducted by the fish crew. The awesome thing about these fish is that instead of boring your kids to death with watching a bobber, they can actively participate and catch fish hand over fist, keeping them actively engaged and excited for the next trip. If you are trying to introduce a youth to fishing Bluegill is the fish!

If I had my choice, I  would rather catch bluegill on popping flies from a canoe than almost any other kind of fishing. Of course when fishing that way the accidental large mouth bass explosion is equally awesome!

People are still reporting great catches of trout, but folks who are fishing dawn and dusk are the ones really catching well.

While we are on the topic of fishing I like doing. I will be out of the office next week and will return on Monday the 18th. I might sporadically have access to e-mail, but will definitely not answers calls until I return.

Enjoy the fishing!
