Jicarilla Hunt - Wednesday, May 10, 2017

The weather sure has been a mixed bag of rain, wind, hail, and general awesome fishing weather (if you own lots of gore-tex).

Despite the conditions some anglers have been out and about getting some fish here and there. The roads to Mundo and Embom were graded earlier this week but with all the rain today I'm unsure what condition they will be in once it drys out.

Below are some happy angler photos from Mundo this weekend. For those willing to pay their dues the pay off seems to be awesome fishing! You have to take some chances, and if you are like me, go fishing whenever you can, not just when the report is stacked full of big fish catches. Remember the reports only tell you how the fishing was yesterday.

Good Luck At The Lake!

I apologize with the lack of reports, but very few have been submitted. We have also the gearing up for fisheries work season which gets quite hectic. The good news is that Mundo and Embom have both cleared very nicely and have had few anglers present just a couple each day as far as the Fish Crew can tell.

The one report received was that trolling was not producing very well.

The trout catch from Mundo according to those anglers I've talked to has been slow from the bank, but the weather (mostly wind) has kept folks from giving full day efforts. Very few boat anglers have been seen.

It looks good to me as most afternoons have been slightly to completely overcast (despite the wind) and the water temperature is shaping up nicely.

Get out and fish, submit some reports!

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, April 18, 2017

The weather is heating up which has been a nice change of pace. The lakes are clearing daily. Fishing reports have been scarce but a few folks have said they have landed fish in the 14-22" range at Mundo lake in the last week. One angler noted the catfish bite was very good on the east side of Mundo. Afternoon breezes have been kicking up across the lands, so start early or fish late seems to be the game plan for the most successful anglers.

Stocking update: Embom, Mundo, and Stone Lake have all been stocked with 8-9" fish. In the upcoming weeks larger fish 2-7lbs will be stocked into Mundo and Embom. As always I do not release stocking dates, despite how many, or how creatively people ask.

The fishing has been very good, that should be what counts, right?

If you are not interested in catching smaller fish, I would highly suggest adjusting your techniques to include larger hooks, or larger lures and flies. This is especially a good idea given the turbidity as large patterns move more water and attract bigger more aggressive fish.

Come enjoy the spring time fishing, before summer is here.

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, March 30, 2017

It has been a very busy week. The fishing seems to be heating up as the turbidity settles in Mundo Lake and the temperatures rise (currently about 49 degree water temp for those interested in such things). Today in the two hours I was out helping install the docks three rainbow trout were landed one 18" one 16" and one 14" all on worms.

Mundo Lake is as full as she can be without flooding the spill way parking lot. As of today 3 docks have been installed by the Fish Crew.

All good news. More good news is Stone Lake has recovered to 2012 levels, which is still low, but much much much better than the last 5 years! The lake will be stocked with 8-9" fish this Spring. of course a hot dry summer could totally deplete the gains received thus far in 2017...This stocking is a gamble on a nice cool summer, a good monsoon, and hopefully an awesome winter again. I know that sounds like a lot of wishes, and it is. I would not suggest planning a Stone Lake fishing trip this year as they are going in at 8" to 9"! It is possible they would be near catch-able sized by fall (if a few of the wishes come true). I will re-iterate this is a gamble, and of course I will keep you all up to date as the year progresses.

We are currently scheduling stocking for the spring so the fishing at Embom and Mundo will only be getting better than it already is, which is awesome!

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, March 21, 2017

I know this is the news you have all been waiting for...(Imagine a Drum Roll)...The Ice is off Mundo Lake. The lake has also risen approximately five feet and is only a 2 feet below the parking lot. All good news! The lake due to the run off is turbid (of color). I have not received any fishing reports for trout but the catfish bite was very good on Sunday.

Embom Lake has been overflowing for at least a week and is now complete full to spillway level.

Stone Lake has come up approximately 2 feet and is still receiving run-off as I write this. I will not know total depth increase from run off for a few weeks as I hope we still have some snow coming! (3 feet of fresh wet snow would be great)

DO NOT FORGET :The new permit season starts April 1st.

The fish crew will be getting the Mundo docks out in the next week or so, once run off has slowed down.

We will be stocking trout this year into Embom and Mundo as of now, on a similar schedule to last year (spring and fall).

Hope all is well,

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, March 09, 2017

Quite a few of you have been calling and writing, and the common question is if the lake is open for fishing... As of today there is still ice covering Mundo Lake. It is not safe for ice fishing and it is covering the complete lake surface making open water fishing impossible. The weather has taken a serious swing towards spring so I do not think the sheet will stick around much longer.

Just to let everyone know the new permit season starts on April 1st 2017. The new proclamation has been posted to the main page of the website. There were no changes made to limits or pricing for the 2017/2018 season. Please remember to read the proclamation and familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations.

We get a lot of questions at the lake about limits, and I wonder what would have happened if the angler bumped into a warden instead of the fish crew...

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Fish Folks,

The ice sheet at Mundo Lake has receded approximately 5 feet from shore, that usually means open water season is around the corner. Of course it is still obviously winter here with about a foot of snow falling lasting night and this morning.

So there is not enough ice to ice fish, and to much ice to open water fish. It is a bummer for those who have a serious case of cabin fever, but really good news for the quantity of water in our lakes. Obviously the more snow, the better chances of run off helping bring water into the lakes... For obvious reasons there are no up to date fishing reports...

Hope all is well,

Jicarilla Hunt - Monday, February 13, 2017

Fish Folks,

The weekend put a hurting on the ice sheet at Mundo, unseasonably warm temperatures and rain all day Saturday softened what is left of the ice sheet into what I would describe as a "snow cone" consistency. There is also some run off coming in, putting water under and over the sheet which is softening the edges where it is entering the lake significantly. At this time the lake is NOT SAFE for fishing!

We are getting snow today which is great for a possible spring run off into the lakes, hopefully we can recover some storage volume in the recreational lakes this year. I do not want to jinx it so that's all I'm going to say about the possibility.

09 February 2017

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, February 09, 2017

This week was unseasonably warm and one day rain, causing the ice sheet to deteriorate at a rapid rate. Currently there is 6" of standing water on the ice sheet and it is not safe for fishing. It's t-shirt weather outside today so I would suspect the sheet is going to continue to erode until we see colder day time temperatures.

I'll update the ice information again on Monday.

Enjoy the weekend,

06 February 2017

Jicarilla Hunt - Monday, February 06, 2017

Received a few reports from the weekend, most mentioned ice thickness between 6"-9" with crusty snow and some slush.

Fishing for one angler was very good for catfish, bluegill with some nice 8" plus bluegill and even a few trout for the complete Mundo Slam. Mr. Lee submitted some of the photographic evidence to jicarillafishqs@gmail.com over the weekend and are presented below. If that is not motivation I don't know what is. He said total he caught 31 catfish, 2 trout, and 9 bluegills and also released a few more. The bass through the ice is worthy of a trophy in my opinion (sadly I don't have any to give).

Despite winters weird ways the season keeps going and I personally am very glad folks keep having good days on the hard water.

Hope all is well and GO FISHING, football is over!
