Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, January 26, 2017

Folks,

The Fish Crew went out to Mundo yesterday and the ice was approximately 4" thick with 3" of slush and 5" of snow.

The Crew did not venture to far now wide as the snow cover makes it impossible to see any problematic areas where the ice may be more variable or weakened.

The weather is supposed to be cold all week so conditions may improve if this weather pattern continues.

I will check the ice Monday morning and report the findings to the blog.

Have a great weekend!

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, January 17, 2017

On January 7th the Jicarilla Game & Fish Department held the 11th Annual Ice Fishing Derby at Mundo Lake. The Derby had eighty contestants this year and prizes were given in multiple categories.  The Game & Fish would like to thank all of the participants in the 11th Annual Ice Derby as well as our gracious Event Sponsors: KCIE 90.5 Dulce, Wildhorse Casino & Hotel, Jicarilla Power Authority, Basin Pump & Supply Company, Jicarilla Public Relations Office, Dulce Autoparts, Running Elk Corporation, East Main Trading Center, and Jicarilla TRU Value.

Of course this event would not have been possible without staff from the Game & Fish Department including: Rosenberg Tafoya, Newton Vicenti, Augustine Gomez, and our college intern Talbertt Caramillo.

Hopefully all of you who missed this year’s event will be able to join us in 2018! Mr. Sue Lee sent over a link to his video of the event, CLICK HERE TO WATCH!

Today I went out and checked the ice conditions at Mundo and Embom. Currently both lakes have approximately 2” of ice/5” of slush/ 2-3” of snow. This means that the ice is not safe for human traffic or fishing… This winter has given us quite the mix up with days and days of rain and warm night time temperatures fairly regularly. I do not know if the ice will “turn around”, as that would be quite abnormal, not saying it isn’t possible, just highly unlikely.

We will of course update information on ice conditions as it becomes available. At this rate I would start cleaning up the open water gear and finding the drain plugs for your boats… The Fisheries Crew is excited for 2017 season and we hope to see you all up here soon!

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, January 12, 2017

Fish Folks,

The warm weather and rain has slushed Mundo Lake. It is currently not safe for fishing. The weatherman says a cold front might be coming in this weekend. I will update the ice conditions on Monday.

I will also post the results of the 11th Annual Ice Derby!

Have a good weekend,

-Fish Crew

Jicarilla Hunt - Friday, January 06, 2017

Folks,

After a stressful warm and rainy Thursday the weather finally snapped into winter mode and the ice recovered to 7" thick.

So that means the Derby WILL BE HELD AS SCHEDULED TOMORROW!

Hope to see you all out there!

January 3rd 2017

Jicarilla Hunt - Tuesday, January 03, 2017

Folks,

The Ice thickness at Mundo is approximately 6-7" thick. The Ice Derby will be held this Saturday unless some unforeseen warms spell reduces the ice thickness considerably (for my mental health's sake, I hope this does not occur).

Hope to see you all at the event.

Happy New Year from the Fisheries Crew!

Jacob

This seven pounder was caught this New Years Weekend, so I think the fishing should be pretty good as well...

Jicarilla Hunt - Thursday, December 29, 2016

Folks,

Just checked the ice and it appears to be at an average thickness of 4.5". It has been cold and the ice is forming fairly consistently. I think we are going to be in great shape for the 11th Annual Ice Derby next Saturday January 7th 2017.

Look forward to seeing you all at the derby!

Happy New Year,

Jacob

P.S. The Nation will be on holiday Monday the 2nd so the next ice update will be on Tuesday the 3rd!

27 December 2016

Folks,

It appears we are having the most delayed ice season in recent memory. Today ice was approximately 4” thick at both Mundo and Embom both had highly variable areas with much less ice. There is a light layer of crunchy snow on both lakes. Roads into the lakes are snowy and require a 4x4 vehicle with good clearance to access safely.

I’m not a weatherman but the ten day forecast is calling for clear and cold, which should hopefully get ice fishing season started.

I will be updating this report by the end of the week to keep everyone up to date on the ice progress. This weekend is a National Holiday and we will be closed Monday the 2nd of January. I therefore will be updating this report again on Tuesday the 3rd.

Happy Holidays from the Jicarilla Fisheries Crew!

Jacob

19 December 2016

Jicarilla Hunt - Monday, December 19, 2016

Fish Folks,

Due to heavy rain this weekend the ice thickness has shrunk to approximately 1.5” at both lakes. The good news is the slab at Mundo is now covering 100% of the lake and is good clear ice. Not safe to fish as of yet but a great base layer that should (barring any more rain) be in good shape to fish very soon.

The rain was quite unexpected and now we’re experiencing arctic cold conditions single digit/negatives at night. So things will shape up quickly.

As always I’ll keep you posted.

15 December 2016

Howdy Fish Folks,

I know you are all patiently awaiting hard water season (well some of you are patient). As of today Embom lake has developed a complete cap of ice but it is not thick enough to support weight. Mundo Lake has almost formed a complete cap of ice, with about 1 acre of open water remaining. Ice at the edges was not thick enough to support weight (2” on average). So far the ice appears to be developing clear and has no snow on top.  Let me repeat that just for good measure, THE ICE IS NOT THICK ENOUGH (YET) TO SUPPORT WEIGHT ASSOCIATED WITH FISHING.

I imagine based on previous years that we will be seeing weight bearing ice around the weekend of Christmas. That of course is a guess, and is subject to change depending on what the weather decides it’s going to send our way.

Dust off the ice gear, as the season is getting ready to start.

I will be taking some holiday time off, but will try to keep the office informed of ice conditions during my leave.

As always NO ICE IS SAFE. Use your best judgement to insure your safety when navigating frozen bodies of water.

Happy Holidays,

Jacob
