Elk Hunting

The Jicarilla Reservation offers exciting, high quality Bull Elk Hunts on 850,000 acres of spectacular elk habitat in northern New Mexico. The Jicarilla is home to 4000+ resident elk that roam the ponderosa pine forests and pinyon-juniper mesas where the San Juan Chain of the Rocky Mountains meet the Colorado Plateau. This elk herd is managed for high bull:cow ratios and high hunter success. The average age of bulls harvested is 7-years old, with an average score of 300+. Hunter success rates range from 65-75% for bow hunters, to 85-95% for rifle hunts. Hunter numbers are kept to a minimum to provide each client with the opportunity to chase bugling bulls in their native habitat.

There are quality Archery Bull Elk Hunts available during September. These hunts, at the peak of the rut, offer some of the best calling opportunities, and our archery clients often harvest the biggest bulls of the year. Early Season Rifle Bull Elk Hunts begin October 1. These hunts offer the highest success rates for harvesting long-tined, heavy-beamed 6x6 bulls. On the reservation the rut extends into mid to late October. If you are looking for an exciting, affordable rut hunt that offers high success rates on mature bulls, look no further.

Our Late Season Rifle Bull Elk Hunts are a unique opportunity to hunt bulls when they congregate on winter range. A limited number of Late Season permits are offered in November, December and January for those who like hunting in colder weather, with the possibility of snow for tracking. These excursions involve lots of glassing, and are classic spot-and-stalk hunts. Some great bulls are taken each year during the Late Season hunts, a perfect opportunity for those clients whose schedules prohibit early fall hunts.

Archery and Late Season Bull Elk licenses are issued 1st come/1st served beginning in early April (no draw!).  Our early rifle October hunts are issued by random draw, with no preference point system. All clients are guided by experienced Jicarilla tribal member guides. Permit numbers are determined annually, based on the availability of trophy bulls and previous year's hunter success. We strive to provide each client the opportunity to harvest a great bull.

Guided Cow Elk Hunts are offered each year, as part of our management program to maintain elk numbers in balance with available habitat. These hunts are an excellent opportunity to enjoy this magnificent country, and fill the freezer with delicious elk steaks. Success rates approach 100%. Cow Elk permits are also issued by random draw and group applications are welcome.
