Excellent ice fishing opportunity

The ice season is off to a terrific start at Horse Lake. Five nice fish were landed in just two hours of fishing early friday afternoon. These Rainbows ranged in size from 18-20 inches and averaged just over 3 lbs. The fish were hitting tiny white shad lures, white curly tails with pink heads, and yellow curly tails. The ice was in good condition with thickness in the 6-8 inch range. The road to Horse Lake is in poor condition with 6-8 inches of fresh snow on the ground making 4 wheel drive a necessity. Remember that ice is never completely safe so be careful and have a great time. (photos of these fish are on the website)

Fishing Report 12/27/06

The Jicarilla Game and Fish Department is pleased to announce that suitable ice conditions are here at last. Ice thickness at Horse lake is between 5-6” and fishing is good. Four anglers were interviewed on 12/27/06. They landed 5 rainbow trout in the 16-19” class, in 2 hours fishing, using garlic-corn, worms, and a pink and purple jig. At this time Horse lake has the most stable ice, and fishing the other lakes is not recommended. However, conditions can change rapidly and the forecast looks like cold weather for the next week or so. Remember that Ice is never completely safe so please take the necessary precautions to have a safe enjoyable experience. As always please contact Kevin Terry at the Jicarilla Game and Fish Department (505-759-3255) for more information.

Fishing Report Dec. 10-16,2006

MUNDO Lake- Unstable ice with portions of open water. Not safe for ice fishing but possible shore fishing opportunities.

HORSE Lake- Very thin and dangerous ice conditions exist currently.

STONE Lake- Closed for the year for Non-Tribal members

Enbom Lake- Very thin and dangerous ice conditions exist currently.

There has been a series of freezing and thawing cycles on our lakes for the past few weeks. Therefore types of fishing access has also changed. There has been a few ice fishermen out lately, however, we strongly reccomend waiting for more stable conditions before ice fishing. For more information please contact Kevin Terry (fisheries biologist) at the Jicarilla Dept. of Game and Fish (505) 759-3255 thanks.
