The Jicarilla Apache Reservation has a well deserved reputation for growing exceptional mule deer, and has produced numerous record book heads both in the past and recently. Closure of all deer hunts for 3 years in the late 1980s and a progressive deer management program have reestablished the Jicarilla Reservation as the premier trophy mule deer hunting area in the west. A limited number of guided hunting trip permits are issued by random drawing for the December hunt. Success rates approach 100%, with at least one record-book buck taken each year. This is truly a hunt-of-a-lifetime. Trophy mule deer hunt
Elk have increased dramatically in recent years and the Jicarilla Reservation offers excellent New Mexico elk hunts for both archery and rifle hunters. Bulls can be hunted during the early fall bugling season or later in winter when snow moves the bulls into lower, less rugged terrain. Both hunts produce exceptional trophy bulls. Success rates are high and 6x6 bulls are the rule, not the exception. Permits are available by random draw. New Mexico elk hunt

2006 Guide List

Numerous cow elk permits are available each year to the public, by random draw. These hunts are a necessary elk management tool that provides hunters an inexpensive but exciting hunt in a scenic winter setting. All big game hunters are required to hire a Jicarilla Tribal Member Guide. Guides can accommodate up to two hunters per hunt but many hunters prefer to hunt one-on-one with their guide. Most hunts are from four-wheel drive vehicles but individual hunter requests for horseback or foot hunts are accommodated.
